Welcome to the Michigan State Police crime statistics website.  Data on this site was collected from participating law enforcement agencies throughout the state.

This website allows access to two different types of data collection systems that can be used to create queries and reports:

·       The Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) summary-based data

·       The Michigan Incident Crime Reporting (MICR) incident-based data

The difference between the collection of incident data and the traditional summary data is the degree of detail in reporting.  Under the summary UCR program, only the most serious offense was reported, along with Arson and only on eight crimes: Murder, Forcible Rape, Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Burglary, Larceny, Motor Vehicle Theft, and Arson.

The MICR system collects crime data concerning 63 different data elements for 99 file classes.  Each MICR incident may contain up to seven different record types: Administrative, Offense, Offender, Victim, Arrest, Property, and Address.  Because of the differences between the UCR summary data and the MICR incident data, cross-comparisons between the two data sets would yield inaccurate trend analysis. 

In addition, this website allows users to view the annual Crime in Michigan report dating back to 1997.  Calendar year 2007 was the first year that Michigan published the annual report using exclusively incident-based data.  Prior to 2007, conversion back to the FBI Summary system was required for the annual Crime in Michigan report.   Also in 2007, the MICR program was converted to an Oracle server from a Mainframe server.  Due to this conversion, a searchable data set could not be produced for 2007 data and is only available in the Annual Publications section of this website.

Important Notes

Violent crimes consist of the following Michigan crime categories:

·       Murder/Non-negligent Manslaughter (Voluntary)

·       Sexual Penetration – Penis/Vagina CSC 1^st and 3^rd degrees (Rape)

·       Sexual Penetration – Oral/Anal CSC 1^st and 3^rd degrees (Rape)

·       Sexual Penetration – Object CSC 1^st and 3^rd degrees (Rape)

·       Robbery

·       Aggravated Assaults

To calculate Violent Crime totals, add together the number of victims of murder, rape, and aggravated assaults with the number of known offenses of robbery.

To calculate a Violent Crime Rate, divide the number of reported crimes by the total population; the result is multiplied by 100,000.  Using the example above:

16,790 ÷ 548,679 x 100,000 = 3,060 for every 100,000 persons

Users should not use the 100,000 population if a city or township does not have that many people living within that community.  You must first identify the community’s population total before calculating the crime rate.
